"Quebec Declares End to Measles Outbreak as Cases Drop"

QUÉBEC — Quebec’s Health Department has declared an end to the measles outbreak in the province

QUEBEC – The Health Department of Quebec has officially declared an end to the measles outbreak that affected the province. This announcement comes after a careful evaluation indicated that no new cases of measles had been reported over the weekend, signaling a potential end to the public health crisis.

Marie-Christine Patry, a spokeswoman for the Health Department, stated that an outbreak can be considered finished if there are no new reported infections within a span of 32 days. In the case of Quebec, the outbreak commenced in December 2024, instigated by a contagious traveler who had entered the province prior to their diagnosis.

Throughout the duration of the outbreak, a total of 40 cases were documented in Quebec, with the majority—32 cases—concentrated in the Laurentians region, located north of Montreal. This regional spike underscored the localized nature of the outbreak, necessitating focused health interventions and public awareness campaigns.

The federal government has reported a broader context, revealing that across Canada, 880 cases of measles have been recorded in five provinces as of early 2025. Ontario has been particularly affected, accounting for the vast majority of cases with a staggering 804 infections. This highlights the ongoing public health challenge posed by measles, especially in light of growing vaccine hesitancy in some communities.

Patry confirmed that there have been no new measles cases reported in Quebec since March 18, marking a significant milestone in the province’s effort to control the outbreak. The Health Department will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that the measles virus remains contained and that public health standards are upheld.

As the situation evolves, health officials are taking proactive steps, including promoting vaccination efforts. In conjunction, public health initiatives are vital to prevent future outbreaks and ensure community immunity against measles and other preventable diseases.

This report offers a glimpse into Quebec's current public health landscape as officials remain vigilant in safeguarding against contagious diseases. The commitment to vaccination and community awareness is crucial in shaping a healthier future for all residents.
