"Biden Takes Responsibility for Trump's Victory"

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Joe Biden says he’s responsible for Donald Trump’s victory last fall, but he attributed Kamala Harris ‘ loss, at least in part, to sexism and racism

Former President Joe Biden recently commented on his perceived role in the political landscape following the contentious 2024 election. In an interview on ABC's "The View," he expressed his belief that he was responsible for Donald Trump's victory, while attributing Kamala Harris' difficulties in the race partially to sexism and racism.

During the interview, Biden, who left office in January, addressed the broader concerns facing the Democratic Party, including worries about his age and Trump's divisive leadership. The 82-year-old stated he maintained silence during Trump's initial days in office, a customary way to allow a new administration to settle in without interference. He voiced surprise at how significantly gender and race impacted the recent election outcome.

Biden remarked, "They went the sexist route," referring to criticisms that a woman, especially a woman of mixed race, could not lead the country. Despite the challenges, he acknowledged, "I was in charge and he won, so I take responsibility."

Since departing from the White House, Biden has largely distanced himself from active politics. However, he admitted he stays in contact with Harris, providing guidance as she navigates her political future. He conveyed hope that she remains engaged in politics, despite not revealing the specifics of his advice.

Addressing concerns over his cognitive abilities, especially following a poorly received debate performance, Biden rebuffed claims regarding his mental fitness. He also sidestepped critical comments about Democratic leaders who allegedly urged him to withdraw from the race, stating, "The only reason I got out of the race was because I didn’t want to have a divided Democratic Party." He emphasized that while the general Democratic electorate was not as concerned about his age, party leaders and significant contributors were.

Additionally, the interview featured Jill Biden, the former First Lady, who defended herself against allegations that she shielded her husband from scrutiny regarding his age. "It was very hurtful especially from some of our so-called friends," she stated, asserting that she did not create a protective environment around him during his presidency.

Regarding Trump's performance in office, Biden was unreserved in his criticism, stating, "He’s had the worst 100 days any president has ever had." This remark underscores Biden's ongoing engagement with contemporary political discourse, despite his efforts to step back from the spotlight since leaving office.
