"Wildfire Near Tantallon Contained Amid Fire Ban"

Firefighters will return to the woods this morning to reassess a wildfire that broke out yesterday afternoon near Tantallon

Firefighters are set to return to the woods this morning to reassess a wildfire that ignited yesterday afternoon near Tantallon, Nova Scotia. The situation has prompted a coordinated response from multiple fire-fighting agencies, highlighting the ongoing challenges presented by dry conditions in the province.

According to the Halifax Professional Firefighters Union, emergency crews reached the scene on Pipeline Road, adjacent to Big Indian Lake, at approximately 3:10 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered significant smoke emerging from a heavily forested area. This prompted an immediate call for additional resources.

In response to the fire, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) dispatched both ground crews and a waterbombing helicopter to assist in controlling the blaze. The rapid response proved essential, as the fire expanded to about 1.2 hectares before the firefighting teams were able to contain its spread effectively.

By just before 9 p.m., the Halifax Regional Municipality issued a follow-up alert confirming that the fire had been contained. Due to the darkness, firefighters left the area but planned to return at first light to further assess the situation and ensure that the fire remained under control. Importantly, officials noted that no structures were at risk in the vicinity of the fire.

This wildfire incident coincided with the DNR's recent announcement declaring a total fire ban across Nova Scotia. This ban comes as a response to the prevailing hot and dry conditions that have heightened the risk of wildfires throughout the province. The fire ban prohibits open fires, including campfires, bonfires, and brush fires, as well as any fire in chimineas or other outdoor enclosures that utilize wood as fuel.

The current situation underscores the heightened fire risk associated with the ongoing dry weather and the importance of adhering to fire bans to prevent similar incidents in the future. As teams regroup this morning, all eyes will be on the effectiveness of containment strategies and the ability to manage the aftermath of this wildfire.
