NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The funeral of Kenya's former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is currently taking place in his rural home, amidst heightened security measures due to violent incidents that erupted in the capital during the service. The ceremony is expected to honor Odinga's legacy as a champion of democracy, with full military honors and traditional rites, as he is laid to rest beside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, who was a key figure in Kenya's independence and served as the nation’s first vice president.

Thousands of Kenyans, alongside dignitaries from across Africa, have gathered to pay their final respects to Odinga, who has been described as a "selfless pan-Africanist." The political icon, aged 80, passed away in India on Wednesday, and his body arrived in Nairobi on Thursday, greeted by throngs of mourners. Over the past three days, four public viewing events attracted huge crowds, resulting in tragic incidents that left five fatalities and numerous injuries due to stampedes.

Although Odinga was unsuccessful in his five presidential bids, he played a significant role in Kenyan politics, forming political agreements with three presidents during times of national crisis. President William Ruto, in his remarks on Friday, acknowledged Odinga’s contribution to stabilizing the country following a political pact enacted in March this year. This agreement followed months of intense anti-government protests during which young Kenyans confronted authorities and caused extensive damage to parts of the parliament buildings.

Odinga also had aspirations beyond national politics, including an unsuccessful campaign for the position of African Union chairperson. His previous involvement in mediating political conflicts on the continent has only heightened his influence, as noted by former AU Deputy Chairperson Erastus Mwencha, who remarked on Odinga's role in the struggle for the second liberation, reflecting on ongoing challenges for democracy faced by various African nations.

Throughout his political career, especially during his tenure as prime minister in 2010, Odinga significantly contributed to constitutional reforms, marking a pivotal moment in Kenya's governance.
