KELOWNA A tragic incident has occurred involving a British Columbia man, Joe Pendry, who succumbed to injuries sustained after a confrontation with a grizzly bear in the East Kootenay region. Pendry, aged 63, passed away on the morning of Saturday, October 25, 2025, after spending over three weeks recovering in Kelowna General Hospital.
Janice Pendry, Joe's wife, reported that her husband had shown signs of improvement before his passing. He was able to walk around the hospital and was even in good spirits, sharing laughter and jokes with family the night prior to his death. Doctors, however, believed that the cause of his death was related to a blood clot.
The harrowing bear attack took place on October 2 while Pendry was hunting elk near Fort Steele, which is situated northeast of Cranbrook, B.C. During the encounter, Joe Pendry exhibited remarkable bravery and resilience. Reports state that he not only defended himself by punching the bear but also resorted to biting it as the wild animal charged at him. In a moment of desperation, Pendry managed to shoot the bear in the leg, which prompted the animal to retreat.
After the attack, the bear was later found dead by the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service. The occurrence has raised discussions about wildlife encounters in the region, especially concerning the safety of hunters and the management of animal populations in areas where human activities intrude upon their habitat.
This shocking incident highlights both the dangers associated with outdoor activities and the unforeseen consequences that may arise from encounters with wildlife. Joe Pendry's courageous actions in the face of danger will be remembered by his loved ones and the community as a testament to his character and fighting spirit.
