BANGKOK (AP) — The recent flooding in southern Thailand has resulted in a tragic death toll of at least 145 people, as reported by officials on Friday. The floods, which have been triggered by heavy rainfall across twelve southern provinces, have profoundly impacted over 1.2 million households and approximately 3.6 million individuals, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

During a news conference in Bangkok, government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat detailed that the fatalities have occurred across eight provinces, with Songkhla province being the hardest hit, accounting for at least 110 deaths. As floodwaters recede, search and rescue operations have gained momentum, enabling authorities to access areas previously submerged under water.

In Songkhla province, the death toll saw a significant rise as rescuers were able to reach residential zones from which they had been previously cut off due to deep flooding. Reports indicated a notable increase in recoveries of deceased victims, particularly in Hat Yai, the largest city in southern Thailand. The disaster department confirmed on Friday morning that while most affected areas are witnessing receding waters, some locations still remain critically high in water levels.

The Meteorological Department has indicated that although rainfall has diminished in the southern region, there is still the possibility of thunderstorms affecting certain areas. The flooding has created severe disruptions in daily life, leaving thousands stranded and rendering roads impassable, while low-rise buildings and vehicles continue to be overwhelmed by floodwaters.

Emerging visuals from the hardest-hit regions depict extensive damage, with roads severely degraded, power poles toppled, and household belongings strewn about as debris in the aftermath of the floods. Numerous vehicles have reportedly been overturned or piled on top of each other, indicating the severity of the forces at play during the flooding.

As recovery efforts proceed, the full extent of the damage remains to be assessed as authorities continue to navigate through affected neighborhoods.
