The Halifax Mooseheads experienced a disappointing setback as they suffered their first shutout loss of the season, falling 7-0 to the Newfoundland Regiment. This defeat split their weekend series against the Regiment, showcasing a significant challenge for the Mooseheads on the ice.
During the first period, the Newfoundland Regiment asserted their dominance by limiting the Mooseheads to just six shots. The Regiment was relentless, scoring four goals within this period. Justin Larose was a standout player, netting two of those goals, while Dawson Sharkey and Louis-François Bélanger also contributed to the scoreline by finding the back of the net. Larose made an impactful start for Newfoundland, scoring his 16th goal of the season only 16 seconds into the game, setting an aggressive tone for the team.
The second period saw little improvement for the Mooseheads, who continued to struggle offensively and defensively. Max Dinneen extended the Regiment's lead by scoring his third goal of the season, further solidifying Newfoundland's control over the game.
The third period continued in the same vein, as Dominic Pilote and Will Reynolds added two more goals for Newfoundland, effectively sealing the fate of the Mooseheads. The relentless offensive pressure put forth by the Regiment proved too much for Halifax to handle, and the Mooseheads could not find a way to respond throughout the game.
With this lopsided loss, the Halifax Mooseheads now hold a record of 14-8-1-1 for the season. This game highlights some of the challenges the team has been facing, particularly when it comes to maintaining defensive solidity and offensive effectiveness against strong opponents.
The Newfoundland Regiment swept the game’s three stars, showcasing their well-rounded performance. Chase Anderson was named the first star with an impressive 25-save performance, effectively shutting down any offensive attempts by the Mooseheads. Larose's two goals and two assists earned him the second star of the game, while the third star was awarded to Bélanger, who contributed one goal and three assists to the decisive victory.
The Mooseheads are set to bounce back as they will be back in action on Saturday, December 6, when they return to the Scotiabank Centre to host the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
