MONTREAL – A Quebec coroner has put forth recommendations aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety in the wake of the tragic hit-and-run death of seven-year-old Mariia Legenkovska, a Ukrainian refugee, in December 2022. Coroner Éric Lépine issued his findings in a recent report, emphasizing that the circumstances surrounding the young girl's death were accidental. Lépine attributed the fatal incident to the driver's failure to stop completely at an intersection and the blinding glare of the morning sun.
According to the report, the incident occurred on December 13, 2022, when Mariia was walking to school alongside her brother and sister. A Jeep Grand Cherokee struck her fatally, and the driver fled the scene without offering assistance. The driver later surrendered to police later that day and ultimately pleaded guilty to failing to remain at the scene of the accident.
In light of this tragedy, coroner Lépine is urging both the city of Montreal and the provincial government to implement enhanced safety measures at intersections. One of the key recommendations includes taking sun glare into account as a significant factor when determining safety improvements at these critical points.
The report underscores the emotional impact of Mariia’s death, noting how it resonated throughout Quebec. The incident has ignited calls for increased protections for children navigating city streets. It highlights a growing concern regarding pedestrian safety, particularly in urban areas where traffic can pose significant risks to vulnerable individuals.
While Lépine’s report redacts the victim's name for privacy reasons, it is clear that the loss has sparked discussions about the need for systemic changes to protect children and other pedestrians. The findings and recommendations propose proactive steps to prevent future tragedies by enhancing infrastructure and implementing better driver awareness measures.
Mariia Legenkovska's case has become emblematic of the struggle for pedestrian safety in cities, acting as a catalyst for community discussions and legislative proposals aimed at improving conditions for walkers. This tragic event underscores the critical need for awareness and action to safeguard the lives of young pedestrians in urban settings.
