MONTREAL – A Quebec coroner has put forth recommendations aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety in the wake of the tragic hit-and-run death of seven-year-old Mariia Legenkovska, a Ukrainian refugee, in December 2022. Coroner Éric Lépine issued his findings in a recent report, emphasizing that the circumstances surrounding the young girl's death were accidental. Lépine attributed the fatal incident to the driver's failure to stop completely at an intersection and the blinding glare of the morning sun.

According to the report, the incident occurred on December 13, 2022, when Mariia was walking to school alongside her brother and sister. A Jeep Grand Cherokee struck her fatally, and the driver fled the scene without offering assistance. The driver later surrendered to police later that day and ultimately pleaded guilty to failing to remain at the scene of the accident.
