"AltaGas Expands Propane Influence in China"

CALGARY — Canadian energy infrastructure company AltaGas Ltd

CALGARY — AltaGas Ltd., a Canadian energy infrastructure company, has reported a significant presence in the Chinese propane market within less than a year. The company, based in Calgary, began shipping propane to China in April 2025, after initially opening Canada’s first propane export terminal in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, in 2019.

Since entering the Chinese market, AltaGas has made impressive strides, now supplying six percent of China’s total propane imports. In addition to its success in China, the company has also captured notable market shares in other regions, accounting for 14 percent of South Korea’s liquefied petroleum gas imports and 11 percent of Japan’s propane imports.

Randy Toone, the executive vice-president and president of AltaGas's midstream business, highlighted that increasing demand for propane is anticipated as more Chinese citizens transition out of poverty. This demographic shift is expected to propel the demand for propane used in home heating and other applications significantly.

During a visit to China, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney remarked on the evolving relations between Canada and China, expressing hopes for a “new era of relations” that could serve as a global model of cooperation in times of widespread division and disorder.

This report underscores AltaGas’s strategic position in the international propane market while highlighting the socio-economic changes in China that could drive further demand for their products. As the company continues to expand its footprint in Asia, it is poised to leverage the growing appetite for energy resources in emerging markets, positioning itself as a key player in the global energy landscape.
