Judge and Wife Shot at Home, Investigation Underway

LAFAYETTE, Ind

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana state court judge and his wife are currently in stable condition following a shooting incident at their Lafayette home on Sunday afternoon. The couple, Steven Meyer, a judge at the Tippecanoe Superior Court, and his wife, Kimberly Meyer, sustained injuries during the attack, with Steven suffering an arm injury and Kimberly sustaining a hip injury.

Authorities responded to the scene, located about 60 miles (96 kilometers) northwest of Indianapolis, after receiving reports of the gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered the injured couple and provided immediate medical assistance. Investigators also collected shell casings from the scene as part of their evidence-gathering efforts.

The Lafayette Police Department has launched an active investigation that involves collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies to identify those responsible for the shooting. However, as of now, they have not disclosed any motives or descriptions of potential suspects.

In the wake of this shocking event, Mayor Tony Roswarski expressed his concerns and assured the community that all available resources are being utilized to capture the person or persons accountable for what he described as "this senseless unacceptable act of violence." His remarks reflect a wider concern in the community regarding safety and security.

Kimberly Meyer released a statement on Monday expressing her appreciation for the investigators and medical staff who assisted them. She conveyed her confidence in law enforcement to handle the ongoing investigation effectively, indicating a hopeful outlook for justice in this case.

The incident has raised alarms among other state judges in Indiana, prompting state Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush to urge her colleagues to be vigilant regarding their personal safety. In a letter addressed to the state’s judges, she emphasized the need for judicial security, stating, "I worry about the safety of all our judges. As you work to peacefully resolve more than 1 million cases a year, you must not only feel safe, you must also be safe. Any violence against a judge or a judge’s family is completely unacceptable."

The shooting has underscored the risks facing judges and their families, stirring unease within the judicial community as they continue to carry out their responsibilities amid potential threats. As the investigation progresses, the collective hope of the community remains that law enforcement will swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.
