"Ford Announces Major Roads to Ring of Fire by 2031"

TORONTO — Ontario Premier Doug Ford says construction is set to begin this year on roads to the Ring of Fire region and they should all be completed by 2031

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced significant developments in the construction of roads connecting to the Ring of Fire region, emphasizing that construction is set to begin within the year. Ford stated that the completion of these roads is anticipated by 2031, a timeline that he described as being several years ahead of the previously expected schedule.

This announcement was made during a major mining convention held in Toronto, where Ford also took the opportunity to sign economic partnership agreements with the Marten Falls First Nation and the Webequie First Nation. These agreements are designed to ensure that Indigenous communities in the Ring of Fire region become full economic partners and benefit from the job opportunities created by the development of the area.

The construction plans include the Webequie Supply Road and Marten Falls Community Access Road, both of which are expected to commence this year. Additionally, the Northern Link Road is scheduled to begin construction in 2028, with an anticipated opening three years later, by 2031.

Currently, the Ring of Fire region can only be accessed by air or via winter roads, which limits accessibility. Ford highlighted that the establishment of all-season roads will not only enhance access to the region but will also facilitate the exploration and extraction of what are believed to be significant deposits of critical minerals. He pointed out that this development is expected to create more opportunities for local communities, particularly benefiting their youth.

The Ring of Fire area, located in the James Bay lowlands of northern Ontario, is rich in minerals and has been a focal point for mining interests. The new infrastructure is poised to promote economic growth and sustainability within the First Nation communities, fostering a collaborative relationship between the government and Indigenous groups.

As this report was released, the focus remained clear: the construction of the roads is a crucial step in unlocking the economic potential of the Ring of Fire while ensuring that the First Nations are integral participants in the ongoing development process.
