"Luxury Evacuations Surge Amid Iran War Chaos"

Tens of thousands of airline passengers are stranded by the Iran war that has spread across the Gulf region, but some wealthy travelers are getting out — by paying large sums for luxury flights to Europe via airports that are safe from Iranian drone and missile attacks

The ongoing conflict in Iran has left tens of thousands of airline passengers stranded in the Gulf region. In contrast, some affluent travelers are finding ways to escape by purchasing costly luxury flights to Europe, utilizing airports that remain safe from Iranian drone and missile attacks.

As major airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha, Qatar were closed following the outbreak of the conflict over the weekend, demand for charter flights has skyrocketed. Reports indicate that individuals are willing to pay up to 200,000 euros (approximately $232,000) to secure a flight amid the chaos.

Typically considered a safe and luxurious destination, Dubai travelers are seeking alternatives for evacuation, opting to travel overland to cities like Muscat, Oman, which is about a four-hour drive, or to Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, located over ten hours away. Upon reaching these cities, they are faced with few available commercial flights or must turn to the soaring costs of charter flights.

Altay Kula, CEO of the France-based private jet broker JET-VIP, noted the immense demand for flights, stating, "The demand is huge, and we can't deliver enough aircraft to respond to the demand." An expected charter flight on a private jet, which typically accommodates up to 16 passengers from Riyadh to Porto, Portugal, usually costs around 100,000 euros ($115,800), but Kula remarked that prices have now doubled.

This price surge is attributed to the limited availability of aircraft, the costly repositioning of aircraft, and increased risk assessments from operators. Kula emphasized that the rising costs are not speculative but reflect the harsh reality of the current situation.

Ameerh Naran, CEO of Vimana Private Jets, indicated that prices for flights from the Gulf region to Europe are currently ranging from 150,000 euros ($173,800) to 200,000 euros, depending on various factors like the departure point, type of aircraft, and route complications.

To reach operational airports such as those in Riyadh and Muscat, some travelers are employing private security companies that facilitate transportation, using vehicles varying from standard passenger cars to larger coach buses. Due to significant traffic, wait times at border points with Oman could extend up to four hours, with costs climbing into the thousands of dollars, according to Ian McCaul, operations and planning director with UK-based risk management firm Alma Risk.

McCaul noted that the majority of those seeking to flee are stranded travelers rather than residents. His company has reportedly arranged transfers for over 200 individuals and has provided advice to many others in recent days.

Vimana's clientele spans business executives, families, entrepreneurs, and remote workers who found themselves based in the tumultuous region. Experts from the International SOS security and health services firm predict that the ongoing fighting will continue to disrupt transportation and energy infrastructure for several weeks to come.
