"Unsafe Ice Warning After Youths Fall into Harbour"

HAMILTON — Police in Hamilton are warning of extremely unsafe ice conditions after two youths fell into the city’s harbour and four more jumped in to save them

HAMILTON – Authorities in Hamilton issued a warning regarding extremely unsafe ice conditions following a serious incident involving two youths who fell into the city's harbour. The incident occurred on Saturday, near the Pier 7 Boardwalk at the western edge of Lake Ontario, and drew the attention of local police.

According to police reports, they were alerted to the situation after two individuals fell through the ice. Upon arrival, officers were informed by bystanders that there were a total of six people in the water. Fortunately, all six individuals were rescued and brought safely to shore by responding officers.

Medical personnel assessed the situation, and one of the youths, who had been submerged for a brief period, was transported to the hospital for evaluation. The remaining individuals received on-site medical attention from paramedics.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the two youths who initially fell into the water had been warned about the dangers of venturing onto the ice. As one of them noticed the ice beginning to bend beneath them, they attempted to leap away, inadvertently causing both individuals to fall through the fragile ice. This incident underscores the precarious nature of ice conditions during this time of year.

Authorities emphasized that recent fluctuations in temperatures have rendered ice conditions highly unstable. While the surface may appear solid, the ice can become dangerously thin in a very short period. These unstable conditions pose significant risks, particularly for those who may not be aware of the hazards associated with walking on ice.

Local police are urging residents to exercise extreme caution when near ice-covered bodies of water. Ice that appears solid can often deceive individuals and lead to life-threatening situations, as exemplified by the recent incident in Hamilton.

This situation serves as a critical reminder of the importance of safety and awareness during the winter months, particularly in areas where ice forms over water bodies. Public officials continue to advise against walking or playing on ice until conditions improve and can be assessed as safe.
