The rapper Offset was ambushed by a large group of individuals attempting to rob him outside the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida, last week. The incident occurred on Monday night when Offset was shot in the leg during the altercation, as reported by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Tuesday. Federal investigators are currently on the lookout for the suspects who assaulted the rapper as he was leaving the casino.
According to the FBI statement, during the assault, a single gunshot was discharged, striking Offset in the leg, followed by an unsuccessful attempt to steal his watch. Offset, whose real name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, is well-known for his affiliation with the influential hip-hop group Migos. Although he was hospitalized for a couple of days following the incident, Offset made a notable return to the stage just days later, performing at a music festival at the University of Arkansas on Saturday.
The attackers fled the scene in two separate Chevrolet SUVs. A black Suburban was reported to have escaped towards Hollywood, while a Tahoe headed southbound towards Miami. Following the shooting, law enforcement officials detained two individuals; however, they have not disclosed evidence linking either to the shooting itself.
One of those detained was rapper Lil Tjay, born Tione Jayden Merritt. He was arrested due to an altercation that took place prior to the shooting. The Seminole Police Department confirmed that Lil Tjay faced charges for disorderly conduct and operating a vehicle without a valid license. His attorney, Dawn M. Florio, stated that Lil Tjay did not possess a firearm and was not charged with any weapon-related offenses. He was subsequently released after posting bond.
Offset’s rise to fame came as a member of Migos, one of hip-hop’s most successful groups. Migos is celebrated for its groundbreaking triplet flow, an innovative delivery style that significantly influenced the trap music genre. Throughout their career, Migos achieved remarkable commercial success, including several multiplatinum selling singles like "Bad and Boujee," which reached No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, along with other hits such as "Stir Fry" and "Narcos." The group has released four full-length albums during its tenure in the music industry.
Tragically, Offset has experienced loss within his family, as his cousin Takeoff, another member of Migos, was fatally shot over three years ago at a bowling alley in Houston. This incident adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing narrative surrounding violence in the music industry and its effects on hip-hop artists.
The recent ambush of Offset highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety among high-profile figures in the entertainment world, particularly in public spaces. As federal authorities continue their investigation, the search for the suspects involved in the incident remains a priority.
