HALIFAX – Lobster harvesters in Nova Scotia are optimistic about the upcoming spring season, hoping for higher prices due to a significant rise in operational costs. The lobster fishing season on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia commenced last week, with neighboring regions in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island expected to launch their seasons shortly.
The Maritime Fishermen's Union, which represents the interests of harvesters, has set its sights on shore prices of at least $9 to $10 per pound for lobster. This expectation stems from a pressing need for fishers to offset the increased expenses they have faced since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, harvesters are contending with a doubling of costs associated with essential services and supplies.
Réjean Comeau, the president of the Maritime Fishermen's Union, emphasizes that the financial strain on fishers is significant, as prices for equipment, insurance, labor, and fuel have all surged. The spike in fuel prices, notably, has been attributed to the ongoing conflict related to the Iran war, adversely impacting operational budgets for the harvesters.
In a positive turn of events, the union has expressed hope that China’s recent decision to eliminate its 25 percent tariff on Canadian lobster exports will help stimulate demand. This policy change is anticipated to invigorate the market and ultimately boost revenues for local harvesters, providing them with much-needed financial relief.
The lobster fishing industry is crucial not only to the economy of Nova Scotia but also to the broader maritime region. Many families and communities depend on this industry for their livelihoods. As the fishing seasons progress in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and P.E.I., the focus will remain on ensuring that lobster prices align with the increasing operational costs that fishers are now facing.
This year’s lobster season could bring both challenges due to rising costs and potential opportunities for growth owing to changes in international trade dynamics. Harvesters will be closely monitoring market trends and prices in the hopes that they can secure a better financial outcome this season.
