LONDON (AP) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing increasing pressure following revelations surrounding his controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as the U.K. ambassador to Washington. Despite Mandelson's failure to pass security checks, the Foreign Office overruled the recommendation not to appoint him. Starmer has asserted that he was unaware of this decision, an assertion that has been met with skepticism from opposition figures.
The controversy intensified as Olly Robbins, the top civil servant at the Foreign Office, resigned following public backlash over the debacle. Starmer is scheduled to address Parliament on this issue, which has potential implications for his political future. The appointment, made in December 2024, has come under scrutiny due to Mandelson's previous association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, raising concerns about reputational risks for the government.
Darren Jones, the chief secretary to the prime minister, commented on the issue, noting that the Foreign Office had disregarded the security assessment that recommended against Mandelson's appointment. He expressed incredulity that no minister had been informed of the security assessment, which involved thorough background checking processes, including personal and financial histories.
Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch from the Conservative Party condemned Starmer's claims of ignorance, labeling them as “completely preposterous” and asserting that it was a matter of time before Starmer was forced to resign. Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, echoed this sentiment, demanding accountability from Starmer if he misled Parliament or the public regarding the appointment.
Starmer has maintained that “due process” was followed, despite documents released in March revealing that his staff had raised alarm over Mandelson’s links to Epstein. Following these revelations, Mandelson's position became untenable, and he was dismissed in September 2025 after evidence surfaced indicating he had misrepresented the extent of his connections to Epstein.
The political landscape shifted dramatically for Starmer following the release of millions of pages from Epstein-related documents, which disclosed the depth of Mandelson’s relationship with both Epstein and the U.S. government. This unexpected fallout led to further scrutiny, prompting British police to initiate a criminal investigation into Mandelson, including searches of his properties in London and western England.
Mandelson was arrested on February 23, 2026, under suspicion of misconduct in public office but has since been released without bail as the investigation continues. He has denied any wrongdoing, and currently, he does not face charges related to sexual misconduct. The ongoing scrutiny surrounding Mandelson's connections and subsequent arrest adds to the tumultuous political climate for Starmer.
Additionally, the situation has parallels with the ongoing police investigation into Prince Andrew, King Charles III's brother, who is also facing scrutiny over his friendship with Epstein. The convergence of these high-profile cases has heightened public interest and concern regarding accountability at the top levels of British governance.
As the political fallout continues, Starmer’s government finds itself at a crossroads, with opposition leaders calling for a thorough investigation and greater transparency. The outcome of Starmer's anticipated address to Parliament will likely play a critical role in determining the future of his premiership.
