"Tragic Death of Dr. Cerina Fairfax Shocks Community"

Patients and colleagues are remembering Dr

Dr. Cerina Fairfax is being remembered by patients and colleagues for her devotion as a mother, her compassion as a dentist, and her unwavering strength within her family. Tragically, she was killed by her estranged husband, former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, in an incident classified by police as a murder-suicide. Both were discovered dead in their Annandale, Virginia home early on a Thursday morning, with authorities believing that Justin Fairfax shot his wife before taking his own life. The couple was in the midst of a divorce, and a judge had ordered Justin to vacate their marital home by the end of the month due to escalating tensions.

Cerina Fairfax, aged 49, ran a successful family dentistry practice in the nearby city of Fairfax. A profile on her practice described her not just as a professional, but as an avid reader who enjoyed traveling, practicing yoga, running trails with her Vizsla dogs, and cherishing moments with her family. Virginia Representative Jennifer McClellan stated that their two teenage children were the "people she cherished most," highlighting Cerina's dedication to motherhood and familial bonds.

Friends and patients have recounted their fond memories of Cerina. Terron Sims II, who knew her both as a friend and patient, reflected on her gentle character and emphasized that her work in dentistry was not just a job, but a profound expression of love and service. Her commitment to her profession was recognized widely; in 2015, she was honored as the Outstanding Graduate of the Last Decade by the Virginia Commonwealth School of Dentistry. Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, the interim dean of the dental school, noted that her passing has left a deep void in the community, reflecting on her dedication and mentorship to many in the field.

Leaders within Virginia's dental community have praised Cerina's extensive contributions, both professionally and personally. Ryan Dunn, CEO of the Virginia Dental Association, commended her dedication and volunteer work, stating that she was beloved in her practice and actively contributed to local charitable efforts aimed at serving those in need.

Cerina and Justin Fairfax first met during their undergraduate years at Duke University and were married in 2006. Justin's political career began with an unsuccessful campaign for the Democratic nomination for attorney general in 2013, followed by his election as lieutenant governor in 2017. His political ascent was marred by allegations from two women accusing him of sexual assault during a period before his marriage to Cerina, which greatly impacted his career, leading him to leave office at the end of his term in 2022 after an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid.

According to court documents, the Fairfaxes had been separated for nearly two years prior to the tragic incident. Despite the separation, they continued to reside under the same roof along with their children, who were present at home during the deaths. A judge presiding over their divorce proceedings had noted the heightened tensions within their household, stating that it was clear that the situation had been volatile for an extended period.
