"Bear Costume Insurance Fraud Leads to Jail for Trio"

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three people in California have been sentenced for insurance fraud in a bizarre scam that involved someone dressed in a bear costume damaging luxury cars

In a peculiar case of insurance fraud, three individuals from California have received sentences following their involvement in a scheme that featured someone dressed in a bear costume allegedly damaging luxury vehicles. The California Insurance Department reported that the trio orchestrated staged incidents inside a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes vehicles in 2024, subsequently filing fraudulent claims with insurance companies seeking a total of nearly $142,000 in payouts.

The bizarre operation, dubbed "Operation Bear Claw," involved the defendants presenting videos to the insurance firms, purportedly depicting a bear rummaging inside the vehicles. However, an investigation led to the conclusion that the footage clearly showed a person in a bear suit, as evidenced by a review conducted by a biologist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Two men from the Los Angeles area, along with a woman, pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud charges. Each was sentenced to participate in a weekend jail program, followed by a probation period. In addition to their sentences, two of the individuals were also ordered to pay over $50,000 in restitution. Meanwhile, a fourth suspect involved in the case is scheduled for a court hearing in September.

During the investigation, detectives executed a search warrant at the suspects’ home, where they recovered the bear costume used in the fraudulent acts. The situation drew attention due to the rise in incidents of bears breaking into homes or trash cans across California, with animals reportedly rummaging through refrigerators and even taking dips in backyard pools and hot tubs. This phenomenon has been observed from Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada region to the foothill suburbs of Los Angeles.

Photos submitted by the insurance department exemplified damage to vehicles, with noticeable scratches on their seats and doors. The ongoing issue of wildlife encroachment into suburban areas highlights the unusual circumstances surrounding this case. Although bears have been a persistent problem in California for years, the use of a bear costume in a fraudulent insurance scheme has added a unique twist to the ongoing narrative of human-wildlife interactions in the state.
