"Counterterrorism Police Investigate Arson in London"

LONDON (AP) — British counterterrorism police are investigating an attempted arson attack in London, one of a string of recent incidents targeting Jewish and Iranian premises in the city

LONDON (AP) — British counterterrorism police are currently investigating an attempted arson attack in London, which is part of a disturbing trend of recent incidents targeting Jewish and Iranian establishments within the city. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the investigation is being led by Counter Terrorism Policing London due to the similarities observed in these attacks.

On Friday night, a man was seen placing a bag containing three bottles of fluid outside a building that was formerly associated with the Jewish community. The individual attempted to ignite the contents of the bag, but the attempt was not fully successful, and he fled the scene. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with this attempted arson.

The location of the incident, in the Hendon area, is near Golders Green, where a significant attack took place on March 23. On that occasion, four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity were deliberately set on fire, resulting in charges against four individuals related to that attack. The police have not yet linked the recent incidents directly to the burning of the ambulances or an attempted arson attack on a synagogue in northwest London that occurred on the preceding Wednesday.

In addition to the synagogue incident, reports indicate that on the same day, an ignited container was thrown into the premises of a Persian media organization located in Wembley, which is also in northwest London. Following this attack, two men and a teenage boy were charged with arson. Thankfully, there have been no injuries reported in any of these incidents, but the nature of the attacks has raised significant concerns among local communities.

The potential connection of these incidents to Iran is also being scrutinized. The UK government has accused Iran of employing criminal proxies to execute attacks on European territory, with a specific focus on opposition media outlets and the Jewish community. The MI5 domestic intelligence service disclosed that over 20 “potentially lethal” Iran-backed plots were thwarted in the year leading up to October.

The ongoing investigation reflects a growing apprehension surrounding public safety and the targeting of specific communities. As counterterrorism police delve deeper into the specifics of these cases, the situation continues to unfold, highlighting the urgency in addressing the threats posed by domestic and foreign actors.
