IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A shooting incident that occurred early on Sunday in the nightlife district adjacent to the University of Iowa campus has left five individuals injured, including three students. Iowa City police and university officials confirmed that multiple victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of gunshot wounds.

Authorities reported that one of the wounded individuals is in critical condition, while the other four are in stable condition. As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made in connection with the incident. The police have circulated photographs of groups of individuals identified as persons of interest to aid in their investigation.

The incident began when officers responded to reports of a large altercation in downtown Iowa City, particularly near a popular pedestrian mall known for its bars and restaurants. As police were arriving, they reported hearing gunshots in the vicinity. Numerous videos that emerged on social media depicted chaotic scenes of multiple fights erupting in front of an outdoor bar, prompting a frightened crowd to scatter.

University President Barbara Wilson expressed her concern for the affected students and their families, stressing that support services are available for the campus community. She stated, "While we await additional information, I am thinking about these students and their families, friends, and all the people who care about them. I am holding them close in my thoughts, along with everyone in our community who is hurting or feeling shaken right now."

The University of Iowa has a student population of approximately 31,000. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds also commented on the incident, condemning the violence that has devastated both the university community and the state. She offered state assistance to aid with the investigation into the shooting.

In light of the incident, the university issued several alerts instructing students to avoid the area where the shooting took place. One of the alerts noted, "While the investigation is in its early stages, there are no indications any university students were the intended victims."

As the investigation continues, authorities are working diligently to piece together the events that led to this tragic incident, and the local community is left grappling with the aftermath of the violence that occurred in the heart of a typically vibrant social scene.
