"Nova Scotia Approves Upper Afton Wind Farm Project"

A wind farm in an eastern part of the province has been granted an environmental assessment approval by the Nova Scotia government

The Nova Scotia government has granted environmental assessment approval for a new wind farm project in the eastern region of the province. This significant initiative, known as the Upper Afton Wind Project, will span Antigonish and Guysborough counties. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2027, aiming to create up to 250 job opportunities during the building phase.

The wind farm will consist of as many as 28 turbines, each with a capacity of eight megawatts. These turbines are expected to be operational by 2029, contributing to the provincial goal of transitioning to clean, renewable energy sources.

The electricity generated by the Upper Afton Wind Project will be utilized for producing green hydrogen through a facility planned by the Membertou Development Corp. and EverWind N.S. Holdings Ltd. This partnership aligns with the province's broader aim of fostering sustainable energy solutions while addressing climate change challenges.

Once the wind farm is operational, it is anticipated to provide employment for approximately eight individuals, either full-time or part-time, over a projected period of 35 years. Additionally, the project is expected to generate about $1.5 million in municipal tax revenue each year, which will benefit local communities economically.

The Nova Scotia government highlights that its recent updates to the environmental assessment process are designed to hasten the province's shift toward clean energy.
