KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — In a tragic escalation of violence, Russian drone and missile strikes on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals and left 21 others injured, as reported by local authorities on Saturday. The devastating strikes took place overnight, with the bodies of the victims discovered in the debris of a residential building that had been destroyed during the assaults. Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk region, provided this information through a Telegram message.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that 11 individuals are currently hospitalized in Dnipro due to injuries sustained in the attacks. Ganzha stated that "the Russians have been hitting Dnipro and other cities and communities practically all night," indicating the intensity and continuation of the bombardment. The attacks not only resulted in casualties but also caused widespread destruction, igniting fires across Dnipro and leading to significant damage to multiple apartment buildings, businesses, and private residences.
In addition to the strikes in Dnipro, two individuals sustained injuries from drone attacks that targeted the Odesa region to the southwest. The regional head, Oleh Kiper, reported that residential buildings, port infrastructure, and vehicles were damaged due to these strikes, highlighting the pervasive impact of the ongoing conflict.
The conflict has also affected regions within Russia itself. Reports indicated that in the Belgorod region, a woman was killed, and a man suffered severe injuries as a result of a drone strike. This incident underscores the cross-border ramifications of the hostilities between Ukraine and Russia.
Following the overnight attacks, Romania's defense ministry announced that drone fragments had been located in a residential area of Galati, a city situated near Romania's southeastern border with Ukraine. Fortunately, no casualties were reported from this incident. Romania has encountered similar situations in the past, confirming the presence of drone fragments on its territory on multiple occasions. This recurring issue raises concerns about safety in areas neighboring the conflict.
The overnight strikes in Ukraine came shortly after a prisoner exchange took place on Friday, during which Russia and Ukraine swapped 193 service members. These periodic exchanges of prisoners have been regarded as one of the few positive developments amid what has been a largely stagnant diplomatic dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv, mediated by the United States. Despite these exchanges, both parties have failed to make significant progress on key issues preventing a resolution to the ongoing conflict, which has now entered its fifth year.
As the situation unfolds, international observers continue to monitor the devastating effects of the conflict on civilians and infrastructure in both Ukraine and bordering regions. The unity and resilience of the Ukrainian people are tested as they face the ongoing threat of violence, and the international community remains engaged in efforts to mediate and bring an end to hostilities.
