LONDON (AP) – Authorities in Northern Ireland have initiated a security alert following a car bomb explosion near a police station in the town of Dunmurry, located on the outskirts of Belfast. The incident occurred late on a Saturday night, prompting the Police Service of Northern Ireland to evacuate nearby homes and advise the public to steer clear of the area as investigations took place.
Member of Parliament Sorcha Eastwood, who represents the Lagan Valley region southwest of Belfast, expressed her deep concern over the attack. She said, “It is distressing and disturbing to wake up to the news that a car bomb exploded outside Dunmurry police station last night.” Highlighting the potential danger, she noted the area's bustling nature, filled with residential housing and local businesses, and emphasized the importance of the apparent lack of casualties, stating, “It is only through the grace of God that there are no casualties.”
As of now, police officials have not disclosed any information regarding the motive behind the attack. However, this incident echoes a similar event from the previous month when police reported an attempted bombing of another PSNI station in Lurgan, approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Dunmurry. In that incident, two masked assailants confronted a delivery driver, placed an improvised explosive device in his car’s trunk, and compelled him at gunpoint to deliver it to the police station. Authorities managed to neutralize the threat by executing a controlled explosion after evacuating around 100 homes in the vicinity.
Authorities suspect that dissident Republican groups are behind such attacks. The police described the Lurgan incident as a “pathetic attempt to remain relevant and provoke fear” among the populace. These dissident factions oppose the peace process established by the 1998 Good Friday Accords, which effectively ended decades of violent conflict centered on differing opinions regarding British rule in Northern Ireland. While major violence has notably decreased since the signing of the accords, such sporadic attacks from dissident groups indicate ongoing underlying tensions.
In light of recent events, the ongoing threat posed by these groups raises concerns about public safety and the enduring fragility of peace in the region.
