LONDON (AP) — Police in London are preparing for significant activity as tens of thousands gather in the U.K. capital for two major demonstrations and a high-profile soccer final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Authorities are deploying armored vehicles, police horses, dogs, drones, and helicopters, alongside a contingent of at least 4,000 officers, to ensure public safety and to prevent any clashes between the protesting groups and soccer fans.

The demonstrations include a protest organized by far-right figure Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, and an annual rally commemorating Nakba, which translates to “catastrophe” in Arabic. This term signifies the exodus of approximately 700,000 Palestinians from present-day Israel during the events surrounding its establishment in 1948. In response to potential tensions, police have established specific routes to keep these two events separate, while remaining vigilant against splinter groups that may attempt to interfere.

Authorities have advised prosecutors to evaluate whether any placards, banners, or chants displayed on social media during the rallies could constitute offenses related to stirring up hatred. Crown Prosecution Service director Stephen Parkinson emphasized that this initiative is focused on preventing hate crimes and maintaining public safety rather than restricting free speech. Special care is being taken due to the heightened atmosphere surrounding these gatherings.

The British government has also taken preventive measures by blocking the entry of 11 foreign nationals who were aimed at participating in the “Unite the Kingdom” rally. Notable figures reported to have been denied entry include Polish politician Dominik Tarczynski, Belgian politician Filip Dewinter, anti-Islam commentator Valentina Gomez, and Dutch activist Eva Vlaardingerbroek. Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated, “We will block those coming into the UK who seek to incite hatred and violence,” underscoring a commitment to enforce the law against individuals intent on causing disorder.

On Friday, (May 15, 2026), Prime Minister Starmer visited the Metropolitan Police command center to discuss security arrangements for the protests with Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley and London Mayor Sadiq Khan. For the first time in a protest policing operation, live facial recognition technology will be deployed. Cameras will be set up in Camden, a North London area anticipated to be frequented by individuals attending the protests, although it lies outside the designated march route.

Meanwhile, at Wembley, authorities are hoping for a smooth event during the FA Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester City, which kicks off at 3 p.m. Law enforcement is particularly focused on ensuring public safety during this popular sports event, which is expected to attract large crowds and has historically been a hotspot for potential disruptions.
