"Montreal's REM Light-Rail: Free Rides This Weekend!"

MONTREAL — Commuters are out in force this weekend to try Montreal’s new western branch of the REM — the city’s automated light-rail network — ahead of its official opening on Monday

MONTREAL — This weekend, commuters are taking advantage of the opportunity to ride the new western branch of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), Montreal’s automated light-rail network, ahead of its official opening scheduled for Monday. The new branch is open for free access from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, allowing riders to visit four new stations: Des Sources, Fairview–Pointe-Claire, Kirkland, and Anse-à-l'Orme.

In an exciting initiative, visitors are invited to collect stamps in a special REM passport at each station. Transit agents are present throughout the weekend to assist and guide first-time riders, ensuring a smooth experience as they explore the new line. Many REM enthusiasts express their eagerness to experience the elevated line, with its scenic views of the West Island.

The new extension significantly benefits several suburban communities located on Montreal’s West Island, including notable areas such as Pointe-Claire, Kirkland, and Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. This expanded network is expected to enhance connectivity and offer a novel commuting experience for residents of these regions.

Originally slated for a late 2024 launch, the opening date for this branch has faced multiple revisions, first being postponed to fall 2025 and then to spring 2026. Despite these delays, the anticipation among local commuters and city officials remains high as they look forward to the new transportation possibilities the REM will provide.

In addition to the exciting introduction of the western branch, the final section of the REM system is projected to connect downtown Montreal to Montréal-Trudeau International Airport. This pivotal segment is anticipated to open before the end of 2027, further expanding the network and enhancing public transit accessibility in the region.

This new development reflects a growing trend in urban areas to invest in sustainable and efficient transportation systems, and the REM’s expansion is a significant step forward for Montreal’s public transit infrastructure. As the city embraces these modern transit solutions, residents are poised to enjoy improved travel options and reduced congestion in the years to come.
