"Victoria Day Weekend: Closures and Openings in Halifax"

It’s the Victoria Day long weekend, which means there will be some closures and service impacts

The Victoria Day long weekend brings various closures and service adjustments across the Halifax area. With warmer temperatures anticipated—peaking at 24°C on Sunday and 20°C on holiday Monday according to Environment Canada—residents are reminded to plan accordingly.

In terms of grocery stores and businesses, major shopping malls such as Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall, and Dartmouth Crossing will remain open on Monday, operating until 5 p.m. On the grocery front, major supermarkets and pharmacies will also be available, along with NSLC locations.

Recreation

Recreational services will see more closures; all branches and departments of Halifax Public Libraries will be closed on Monday. Many recreation facilities will also be out of service, so residents are encouraged to call and confirm specific operations before visiting. However, the Sackville Sports Stadium will be open during regular hours, offering access to the fitness centre and certain drop-in programs. It is important to note that registered programs will not take place.

Services

In the realm of services, there will be no collection for garbage, organics, or recyclables on Monday. Those who typically receive these services on that day will instead have their pickups moved to Saturday, May 16. Additionally, Canada Post will not deliver mail on Monday, causing potential delays for mail recipients.

Transportation

For public transportation, Halifax Transit will operate under a holiday schedule on Monday, providing service adjustments to accommodate the day. Furthermore, paid on-street parking will be available for free, allowing residents to explore without the usual parking fees. The Alderney ferry service will also be operating on a holiday schedule; however, the Woodside ferry service remains unavailable during weekends and holidays.

Blue Nose Marathon

The Blue Nose Marathon is set to continue on Sunday, with a series of road closures expected throughout the morning and afternoon. Key areas affected include the MacDonald Bridge, Agricola Street, and Nantucket Avenue. For residents needing to navigate these changes, a full list of road closures can be accessed through the marathon's official website.

As the Victoria Day weekend unfolds, residents and visitors in the Halifax area are urged to stay informed about open and closed facilities, service alterations, and event-related disruptions to ensure a smooth and enjoyable holiday experience.
