In recent incidents throughout Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), police have arrested three men for impaired driving following separate collisions. The incidents, which occurred over two days, highlight ongoing issues related to impaired driving in the area.
The first incident took place on Monday evening when officers responded to reports of a heavily damaged SUV with flat tires traveling eastbound on Highway 7 in Ecum Secum. Upon locating the SUV at a residence along the highway, police observed a man exiting the vehicle while carrying an alcoholic beverage and displaying clear signs of impairment. Noticing the police presence, the man attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended after a short chase. The 34-year-old resident of Mount Uniacke was subsequently released from custody and is expected to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court at a later date.
The second event occurred on Tuesday morning when authorities were called to the scene of a hit-and-run collision at the intersection of Hammonds Plains Road and Pockwock Road. According to the RCMP, a Lincoln MKS had collided with a Honda Civic. The driver of the Lincoln exhibited signs of impairment and allegedly attempted to bribe the Civic driver to leave the scene. Later, police located the Lincoln at an address on Equestrian Lane, where the driver provided a breath sample that resulted in a fail. The 39-year-old driver, also from Hammonds Plains, was released from custody and is set to appear in Halifax Provincial Court in the near future.
The third incident unfolded late Tuesday evening when police responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash on Cow Bay Road in Eastern Passage. Upon their arrival, RCMP discovered a Lexus IS overturned and unoccupied. It was reported that both the driver and the passenger had fled the scene prior to the police's arrival. Shortly afterward, a separate vehicle arrived, and its driver informed the officers that they were there to pick up their friend who had just crashed. Police then visited the home of the Lexus owner and located the driver, who showed signs of impairment and claimed that his vehicle had been stolen. The 20-year-old man from Cole Harbour was arrested for public mischief and impaired driving, issued a seven-day driving suspension, and will appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court at a later date.
These three separate incidents serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by impaired driving in the HRM. The involvement of alcohol in these situations raises concerns about the safety of road users and the potential for reckless behavior following collisions. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of driving responsibly and the severe consequences that can arise from impaired driving.
