London (AP) – The Cannes Film Festival, renowned for its twelve days of continuous premieres, has once again concluded its extravagant showcase of high fashion. Known for its iconic red carpet, Cannes offers a dynamic environment where celebrities and their stylists have ample opportunities to display luxurious outfits over the course of more than a week, unlike other events like the Oscars or Met Gala.
Throughout the festival, we witnessed a range of couture highlights that not only dazzled but also provided lessons on what not to wear. One significant trend this year was the emergence of voluminous gowns. Despite festival organizers’ disapproval of excessive volume and barely-there designs, several stars embraced structural elegance. Cate Blanchett caught eyes in a Louis Vuitton gown with a playful frilly collar, while Sharon Stone commanded attention in an oversized number by Sophie Couture. Joan Collins, too, brought a dramatic flair with her gown by Stéphane Rolland, which surrounded her like a delicate origami flower. However, such extravagant choices posed challenges for spectators at screenings who struggled to see the screen behind these grand ensembles.
On the contrary, some High Fashion ventures proved unmanageable. Many guests faced humorous predicaments due to faulty outfit choices, leading to awkward moments on the red carpet. Sightings of attendees tripping, moving slowly, or having to navigate the Palais’ 24 steps sideways were common, as designs that looked striking while standing became impractical in motion. Challenges included overly tight dresses around the knees, excessively high heels, and loose fabric strands that caught in the breeze, causing quite the spectacle.
A cornerstone of the festival’s style narrative was the dazzling array of outfits worn by the jury members, who arrived daily to watch the premieres. Under the guidance of jury head Park Chan-wook, the panel featured notable members including Demi Moore, Ruth Negga, Chloé Zhao, Stellan Skarsgård, Laura Wandel, Diego Céspedes, Isaach De Bankolé, and Paul Laverty. Demi Moore, in particular, captivated fashion observers with her diverse wardrobe. She donned an off-the-shoulder lavender Gucci dress, a figure-hugging gown by Jacquemus, a dramatic shaggy fur coat from Gucci’s Resort 2027 collection, and a striking hot-pink gown by the avant-garde label Matières Fécales.
Honorable mentions for outstanding fashion went to several stars who made their sartorial mark at the festival. Colman Domingo stood out in a caped, twinkly purple Valentino shirt, while Cate Blanchett wowed in a backless floral Givenchy gown adorned with tassels. Other style icons included Isabelle Huppert in a beautifully fanned out, bright red Gucci gown, Ruth Negga in a sharp black and white tuxedo ensemble, and Dita von Teese, who echoed Old Hollywood glamour in Tamara Ralph Couture.
As the 79th International Film Festival wraps up, the blend of breathtaking fashion, vibrant styles, and occasional faux pas has once again showcased the unique intersection of cinema and high couture, leaving a lasting impression on attendees and fashion enthusiasts alike.
