"Victor Lucas Honored as Game Changer at Awards"

TORONTO — Victor Lucas, a pioneer of video game journalism who made a career out of shining a spotlight on Canada’s interactive entertainment industry, was celebrated as a “game changer” by his peers in Toronto on Thursday night

Victor Lucas, a trailblazer in video game journalism, received widespread recognition for his contributions to Canada's interactive entertainment landscape during the Canadian Game Awards held in Toronto on May 21, 2026. Lucas, 58, is the creator and principal presenter of "The Electric Playground," a television series that has showcased the video game industry since its launch in 1997.

Lucas was honored with the awards show’s inaugural "Game Changer" award, receiving the only standing ovation of the night from a gathering of fellow game developers and fans who credit him for their inspiration. After the ceremony, many attendees shared memories of growing up watching Lucas on television.

In an interview, Lucas expressed the surreal nature of receiving such praise, noting that while he did not deliberately set out to inspire others, it is gratifying to learn that his work has had a significant impact. "The Electric Playground" aired on various channels across North America, including Rogers’ City TV and G4 Network, transitioning to a daily format in the mid-2000s and spawning a spinoff series, "Reviews on the Run."

The show provided Canadians with one of the few glimpses into the burgeoning video game world during a time when gaming media was largely confined to magazines and the internet was not yet prevalent. Carl-Edwin Michel, executive producer of the Canadian Game Awards, emphasized Lucas's prolific role in early gaming media, mentioning that Lucas inspired many to pursue careers in the gaming industry.

Beyond offering reviews and previews, Lucas and his team made it a priority to visit gaming studios and interview not only creative heads but also programmers, composers, and artists who contribute behind the scenes. Michel remarked that Lucas was the first to spotlight these studios and their workers, with the belief that many developers honored at the awards would not have found their paths if not for Lucas's influence.

Lucas shared his unconventional career journey, which began with busing tables in Vancouver and dabbling in acting in the early 1990s. He found his calling in a moment of reflection while on a bus in Mexico, where he conceptualized "The Electric Playground." Pitching the show to TV producers in the mid-1990s was a challenge, as he had to counter skepticism about the future of video games, where graphics would evolve beyond iconic titles like "Pac-Man" and "Super Mario Bros."

Throughout its 25 seasons and thousands of episodes, "The Electric Playground" has been a launching pad for notable industry figures including Geoff Keighley, Jade Raymond, and Evangeline Lilly. At the awards ceremony, former contributors expressed their gratitude towards Lucas, with Marissa Roberto calling him “the godfather of gaming in Canada.”

Today, Lucas continues to engage audiences by re-airing classic episodes of "The Electric Playground" on YouTube. He reflects on the enduring quality of that era's content and expresses concern that the spirit of collaboration, which characterized the early days of gaming media, is diminishing in an age dominated by solo streamers.

The Canadian Game Awards, marking its second in-person event, comes at a challenging time for the gaming industry as it grapples with ongoing contractions following the pandemic boom in home entertainment. Despite the somber climate, Michel emphasized the importance of celebrating achievements within the industry to avoid a spiral of negativity.

Lucas attributes much of his success to his wife, Marcy Lavoie, who has been instrumental in managing the show’s production. He credits her with turning his visionary ideas into reality, stating, "There would have been no EP without my wife." Together, they have a 14-year-old daughter, Ruby, who has started contributing to "The Electric Playground" content on YouTube.

While Lucas laments the lack of a full production today to document the ongoing transformations in the gaming industry, he reminisces about the evolution of gaming media. He recently received an additional accolade for content creator of the year and humorously acknowledged his status as the "uncle" among younger nominees.

As he reflects on his legacy, Lucas emphasizes the importance of collaboration in storytelling within the gaming world, reminding others that behind every remarkable product lies the shared effort of passionate individuals. “People are interesting. These products are great...but it’s humans that are the story,” he stated.
