DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — An Israeli airstrike on Monday resulted in the deaths of at least three Palestinians, including an 8-year-old child, after the strike targeted a tent that was sheltering displaced individuals. Israel claimed that the tent was being used by a militant. The airstrike took place in Deir al-Balah, which has been less affected compared to other areas in central Gaza.
Health authorities in the Gaza Strip confirmed that the fatalities included two adult men and the child, with another man sustaining injuries. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital reported the casualties, highlighting the impact of ongoing hostilities in the region.
According to the Israeli military, the airstrike targeted Zaher Abu Salem, whom they identified as a member of the Islamic Jihad militant group. The military stated that Abu Salem was involved in the attack on Israel that occurred on October 7, 2023, which marked the onset of the recent conflict.
Despite a ceasefire that took effect in October, Israeli forces have continued to conduct airstrikes, resulting in the deaths of over 1,045 Palestinians, as reported by health officials in Gaza. The Israeli military has announced multiple operations targeting militants, including three separate strikes over the preceding weekend, demonstrating a sustained military focus even after the cessation of major hostilities.
The Health Ministry in Gaza, which operates under the Hamas-led government, maintains comprehensive casualty records that are typically deemed reliable by United Nations agencies and independent analysts. However, these records do not specify the number of civilian versus militant casualties. Various militant groups have reportedly conducted shooting attacks against Israeli troops, prompting Israel to assert that its airstrikes are retaliatory measures against these actions and other alleged violations of the ceasefire agreement. Since the ceasefire began, five Israeli soldiers have lost their lives.
The initial attack by militants on October 7 resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals in Israel and led to 251 people being taken hostage. Israel’s subsequent military offensive in Gaza has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 73,058 Palestinians, including those killed since the ceasefire was established, according to numbers released by Gaza’s Health Ministry.
As the situation continues to evolve, the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip remains critical, with significant loss of life and ongoing military engagements. The international community watches closely as both sides navigate the aftermath of prolonged violence and the quest for a lasting resolution.
