MONACO (AP) – Authorities in Monaco reported the arrest of a foreign national on Wednesday as part of their ongoing investigation into a recent explosion that injured a Ukrainian tycoon and two others. The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was detained in the morning but subsequently released in the afternoon after police determined that further checks were necessary.
The explosion occurred late on Monday at the entrance of an apartment building in Monaco. Officials have not publicly identified the victims of the blast, but they confirmed that the three individuals, comprising a family, appear to have been specifically targeted. According to media reports, Ukrainian construction tycoon Vadym Yermolaiev was among those injured. Yermolaiev has a controversial background; he renounced his Ukrainian citizenship nearly a decade ago and has been under Ukrainian sanctions since 2023 due to his ties to Russia.
Alongside Yermolaiev, a woman and a child were also reported to have sustained injuries in the explosion. The prosecutor’s statement characterized the incident as an attempted assassination, underscoring its seriousness. Additionally, authorities in neighboring France are providing assistance in the investigation.
As part of the investigative process, the injured child has already been interviewed in France. However, the conditions of the other two victims remain such that they are not yet able to be questioned. This situation complicates the investigation and adds urgency to the efforts undertaken by Monaco’s authorities.
The explosion has drawn significant media attention due to the high-profile nature of the victim and the implications of the alleged targeting associated with ongoing geopolitical tensions. Investigators are working diligently to uncover more details surrounding the event and prevent any further incidents.
