TIRANA, Albania (AP) - A massive demonstration took place for the 35th consecutive night in the capital of Albania on Saturday, as protesters demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, the temporary replacement of his government, constitutional reform, and an end to corruption. Media images showed a gathering of tens of thousands of individuals marching along Tirana's main boulevard towards Skanderbeg Square, although there has been no independent verification regarding the total number of protesters.

The nightly protests began in response to a luxury coastal resort development project located in a protected natural area, which is linked to Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law. However, the focus of the protests has broadened to encompass anti-government sentiments and a strong opposition to corruption. Throughout the demonstrations, protesters chanted slogans such as "New Albania" and "Edi Rama, resign."

The symbolism during the march was particularly striking. A tall bust of Prime Minister Rama was erected and subsequently toppled using a rope, mirroring the historic February 1991 event where the statue of long-serving communist dictator Enver Hoxha was dismantled. This demonstration coincided with Rama's 62nd birthday, prompting some protesters to carry “birthday cakes” made from cement, symbolizing the controversial building projects. Additionally, protesters sang an ironic “happy birthday” song directed at Rama.

Many demonstrators carried pink flamingo balloons, linking to claims that the resort construction threatens local flamingo populations. This has led to the protest movement being dubbed “the pink flamingo revolution.” After protesting for about two hours, a sizable group of protesters marched towards a police station to demand the release of individuals who were arrested during a previous protest near the parliament on Thursday.

In a show of escalating tension, some protesters broke windows at the police station. In response, law enforcement deployed a water cannon to disperse the agitated crowd. The ongoing unrest underscores the deep dissatisfaction among Albanians with governmental practices and widespread allegations of corruption. The situation continues to attract attention, highlighting the enduring struggle for political reform within the country.

The context of these protests reflects a broader sentiment among citizens regarding accountability, transparency, and the need for effective governance. As these demonstrations persist, it remains to be seen how the government will respond and what changes, if any, will result from the ongoing displays of civil disobedience.
