"Impaired Driver Charged After Collision with Child"

RCMP in Colchester County laid charges against a woman after several reports of unsafe driving across two counties earlier this week

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Colchester County have filed charges against a woman following multiple reports of unsafe driving that occurred across two counties earlier in the week. The situation began on August 18, 2026, around 2:05 p.m., when members of the public alerted the authorities about a potential impaired driver.

Witnesses reported seeing a white Honda CR-V “weaving through traffic” and maneuvering dangerously by passing other vehicles on Highway 104 near Londonderry, Nova Scotia. Upon arrival, officers attempted to pull the vehicle over; however, the driver continued eastbound on the highway toward Pictou County. Police promptly communicated the situation to the nearest detachment for assistance.

Once Pictou County RCMP received the information, they located the vehicle and tried to initiate a stop. They even deployed a tire-deflation device to halt the car; however, the driver skillfully avoided it. Following this failed attempt, police chose not to pursue the vehicle further out of safety concerns.

At around 3:30 p.m., Colchester County's communication department received an automated crash notification originating from a cell phone. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene on Jollytown and Upper Brookside Roads in East Mountain.

Upon their arrival, authorities discovered the CR-V had ended up in a ditch. A child who had been inside the vehicle during the incident was transported to the hospital and was reported to have sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Observations made by officials at the scene revealed signs of impairment in the driver. Subsequently, she failed a roadside sobriety test and later tested positive for THC, the psychoactive component in cannabis.

The 28-year-old woman from Onslow Mountain has been charged with a total of seven offences. These charges include operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both; two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle; and two counts of flight from a peace officer.

To ensure the privacy of the child involved in the incident, the authorities have chosen not to release the woman’s name, as stated in their official release.
