On September 30, 2023, at approximately 10:20 PM, police operators from the Halifax detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received a concerning 911 call. Although the connection was established, no conversation was initiated on the line; instead, operators were met with sounds indicative of an altercation occurring in the background. As a precautionary measure, the dispatch team decided to call the number back.
When they reached the line again, a woman answered and reported that she had been assaulted by a man she was acquainted with. This prompted immediate action from the emergency responders, who were dispatched to the 7000 block of Highway 224, located just north of Pleasant Valley, Nova Scotia.
The woman informed the 911 operators that the man had access to weapons and that she was in the process of leaving the property for her safety. Upon the police's arrival, they discovered that the woman had sustained non-life-threatening injuries. She was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment.
In light of the potential danger posed by the suspect, nearby residents were instructed to shelter in place while law enforcement assessed the situation. Officers, with the assistance of canine services and a drone, conducted a thorough search of the surrounding area, which included dense forestation in an effort to locate the suspect.
During the investigation, a search warrant was executed at the residence. This led the RCMP to discover a previously stolen vehicle linked to Sipekne'katik First Nation. Additional findings included an airsoft pistol and rifle, raising further concerns regarding the suspect's activities.
The individual suspected in the incident, identified as Jordan Patrick Naugler, 27, now faces a series of criminal charges, which include:
- Assault
- Assault with a weapon (two counts)
- Utter threats to cause death or bodily harm
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (two counts)
- Failing to comply with conditions of a release order (three counts)
- Possession of property obtained by crime
Naugler has appeared in court in Dartmouth and remains in custody as he awaits further court dates. Authorities have emphasized the need for individuals who are experiencing or are at risk of intimate partner violence to reach out for assistance.
