Canadian readers are experiencing a remarkable surge in interest for poet Anne Carson following her recent Nobel Prize win in literature. The Toronto-born artist saw her book sales soar by over 10,000 percent at Indigo, a major Canadian bookseller, as readers rushed to explore her oeuvre.
Indigo reported that sales of Carson's titles skyrocketed by an astonishing 10,325 percent on Thursday, the same day she was announced as the Nobel laureate, in comparison to sales from the previous day. In addition to this, online searches for her works saw an even more extraordinary increase, climbing 20,809 percent from a day earlier.
While Indigo refrained from disclosing specific sales figures—due to the proprietary nature of such information—it did confirm that it sold 18 different titles authored by Carson on that Thursday. The books leading the sales were "Autobiography of Red," "The Beauty of the Husband," and "Red Doc," which have become highly sought-after titles following the announcement.
The increased demand for Carson's work is not limited to bookstores. The Calgary Public Library reported an unprecedented spike in holds for her printed titles, with 435 holds placed since the announcement of the Nobel Prize. Notably, out of 447 total holds on Carson's print books, 131 were specifically for "Autobiography of Red." Library selector Kari Brawn commented on the situation, noting that this holds placement rate for poetry is remarkable, not just for one day but for any title.
To meet the rising demand, the Calgary Public Library announced plans to order additional copies of Carson's books, ensuring that her growing fanbase has access to her writing. The phenomenon extends beyond Calgary; the Halifax Public Libraries also reported an increase of 152 new holds across five of Carson's print titles since the Nobel announcement, attributing this surge to her newfound recognition.
Even the digital realm is witnessing the effects of "Carson fever." The Calgary Public Library acquired 10 of her titles for its Libby digital collection on the same Thursday, resulting in 170 checkouts and 180 holds within a short period. The audiobook version of "Autobiography of Red" has proven especially popular with 73 checkouts, while the e-book of "The Beauty of the Husband" has garnered 43 holds, showcasing the diverse formats through which readers are engaging with Carson's work.
Carson, known for her genre-defying body of work that intertwines poetry, prose, classical mythology, and literary criticism, stands as one of Canada’s most esteemed literary figures. The Nobel win further heightens anticipation around her upcoming book, "Beware the Man Whose Handwriting Sways Like a Reed in the Wind," which is slated for release in February 2027. This combination of critical acclaim and a new publication is sure to keep Anne Carson at the forefront of literary discussions in Canada and beyond.
