"Hit-and-Run Investigation After Police Pursuit"

HALIFAX — Halifax police say Nova Scotia’s police watchdog will investigate after an alleged hit and run Saturday involving a truck that was being followed by city police

HALIFAX - The Halifax police have announced that Nova Scotia's police watchdog will be conducting an investigation following an alleged hit-and-run incident that occurred on Saturday. The incident involves a pickup truck that was being monitored by city police at the time of the incident.

According to the police statement, they initiated pursuit of a black Ford F-150 pickup truck that was unlicensed after it rapidly fled from a parking lot in Dartmouth. The situation escalated when the truck did not comply with the police vehicle’s lights and sirens, ultimately leading to a collision at an intersection.

Reports indicate that a 58-year-old man, who was operating the vehicle involved in the collision, sustained serious injuries as a result of the impact. Emergency medical services promptly transported him to the hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, the truck, which was noted to have fled the scene, continued onto the A. Murray Mackay Bridge, which connects Dartmouth to the Halifax peninsula. As of the latest updates, the truck has not yet been located by the authorities.

In light of the serious nature of this event, the Halifax police have formally referred the case to the province’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) for further investigation. This move underscores the significant procedural steps taken in incidents involving police pursuits and the importance of accountability.

This incident highlights the risks associated with high-speed pursuits and the potential consequences for all parties involved. The investigation by SIRT is expected to provide a comprehensive review of the circumstances leading to the hit-and-run, the police response, and the condition of the injured party.

As investigations proceed, the community remains on alert regarding the ongoing search for the pickup truck and the individual responsible for the collision. Police have urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in the inquiry.
