SRINAGAR, India (AP) – Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated significantly following a deadly attack on tourists in the disputed region of Kashmir. For the second consecutive night, Pakistani soldiers have reportedly fired at Indian military posts along the highly militarized Line of Control (LoC) in the region. The Indian military made this announcement on Saturday, highlighting the ongoing conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
In a statement released, the Indian army indicated that soldiers from multiple Pakistani army posts opened fire on Indian troops overnight. This cross-border firing was described as “unprovoked,” and the Indian troops responded appropriately with small arms. Fortunately, there have been no casualties reported from either side thus far, according to the Indian military statement.
On the previous night, the Indian army had already reported that Pakistani soldiers targeted an Indian post in the Gurez sector using small arms. This increase in cross-border firing raises concerns about further escalation of hostilities in the region, which has a long history of conflict and distrust between India and Pakistan.
Despite these incidents, there has been no immediate comment from Pakistan regarding the allegations of firing. The backdrop to this escalation is a recent massacre in which gunmen killed 26 individuals, with most victims being Indian. The attack took place near the popular resort town of Pahalgam in India-controlled Kashmir and was claimed by a relatively unknown militant group that identified itself as the Kashmir Resistance.
