"Janet Morrison Named President of Memorial University"

ST

ST. JOHN'S — Janet Morrison has been appointed as the new president of Memorial University, the only university in Newfoundland and Labrador. This institution is currently facing a host of issues, including deteriorating infrastructure, budgetary constraints, and low morale among students and staff.

Morrison, who is transitioning from her role as president and vice-chancellor at Sheridan College in Ontario, is scheduled to commence her new responsibilities at Memorial University in St. John's in August 2025. During a press conference held today, Morrison recognized the significant challenges ahead for the university and expressed her commitment to addressing them by promoting a sense of "shared purpose" among faculty and staff.

Nicolas Keough, a spokesperson for the university’s student union, shared his cautious optimism regarding Morrison's appointment, indicating that her leadership might mark a pivotal moment for the institution. He described the current morale among students and staff as "horrible," underscoring the urgent need for positive change within the university community.

The backdrop to Morrison’s appointment includes a leadership crisis at Memorial University. Since 2023, the university has been led by a temporary president following the ousting of former president Vianne Timmons. Her departure occurred amid controversies surrounding her claims of Indigenous heritage, casting a shadow over the university's leadership stability.

In response to ongoing financial troubles, the university announced a hiring freeze in December, further compounding the pressures on the institution. Additionally, a report released by the province’s auditor general in January highlighted a staggering $481 million in deferred maintenance across the university’s campuses, indicating a pressing need for investment in infrastructure.

As Morrison prepares to take on her role, the university community is looking for a shift in dynamics and a revitalization of morale. Her experience in educational leadership at Sheridan College, known for its focus on applied learning and community engagement, may serve as a foundation for her approach at Memorial University.

Janet Morrison's commitment to fostering collaboration and a united sense of purpose within the university could play a critical role in addressing the current challenges. Stakeholders within the university are hopeful that with her at the helm, a new direction can be established that not only improves morale but also attracts the necessary financial resources to revitalize Memorial University.
