During a meeting in March with provincial premiers, Prime Minister Carney urged the attendees to identify significant initiatives that could be classified as "nation-building projects." In line with this request, Ford’s letter articulates several key infrastructure proposals that he wishes the federal government to prioritize. Notably, Ford advocates for the development of the Ring of Fire, enhancing nuclear energy generation, expanding GO passenger train services, constructing a new deep-sea port at James Bay, and executing the ambitious project of building an expressway tunnel for drivers and transit beneath Highway 401.
The response from opposition critics has been largely negative, with many dismissing the idea of the tunnel as a “fantasy.” They argue that the estimated costs could run into tens of billions of dollars and contend that the project would not provide a sustainable solution to the ongoing issues of gridlock in the region. Despite the criticism, the Ford government is actively pursuing proposals for a feasibility study on the proposed tunnel. Premier Ford remains steadfast in his commitment to see the tunnel constructed, regardless of the challenges that may arise.
