"New Bill May Extend Stay for Canadian Snowbirds"

Canadian snowbirds may be able to enjoy longer stays in the United States without the need for a visa if a newly proposed bill in the U.S. House of Representatives is enacted. This bipartisan legislation, introduced by Representatives Elise Stefanik of New York, Laurel Lee of Florida, and Greg Stanton of Arizona, aims to extend the permissible stay for Canadian citizens from 180 days to 240 days.

Named the Canadian Snowbird Visa Act, the bill was introduced at the end of April 2025 and targets individuals aged 50 and over. To qualify for this extension, applicants must maintain a home in Canada and either own or lease a residence in the United States.

The motivation behind this legislative effort coincides with a noticeable trend where many Canadians are opting not to travel to the U.S. This reluctance arises from several factors, such as U.S. President Donald Trump's ongoing trade war, threats of annexation, a weaker Canadian dollar (loonie), and increasing insurance rates that have led some Canadians to sell their U.S. properties.

Laurel Lee, one of the bill's sponsors, emphasized in a news release that extending the duration of stays for Canadians would not only support local communities and stimulate job growth but also enhance the already strong ties between the two neighboring countries.

In addition, this legislative proposal is timely, as the U.S. government has recently mandated that Canadians staying in the U.S. for more than 30 days must register with the authorities, reflecting a broader trend towards stricter immigration control.

The potential for the Canadian Snowbird Visa Act to be enacted represents a significant development for Canadian retirees and seasonal travelers who wish to spend more time in warmer climates during the winter months. If passed, it could provide a simpler pathway for Canadian snowbirds to benefit from the various conveniences and opportunities available in the U.S., especially in relation to leisure and retirement.

This new legislative initiative highlights the importance of cross-border relationships and the economic benefits that can arise from allowing more Canadian citizens to reside temporarily in the U.S.
