ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The East Coast Music Awards concluded in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, showcasing a vibrant celebration of Atlantic music talent. The event, which spanned several days, saw major wins for several prominent artists, including Classified, Kellie Loder, and Maggie Andrew.

Classified emerged as a significant winner of the ceremony, taking home multiple prestigious awards. He was crowned Solo Artist of the Year and Producer of the Year, showcasing his multifaceted talent in the music industry. Additionally, his song "Sure Enough" earned recognition as the Rap/Hip-Hop Release of the Year. The highlight of his night was winning the coveted Release of the Year award for his track "Amnesia," further cementing his status as a leading figure in the Atlantic music scene.

Kellie Loder, an artist hailing from Newfoundland and Labrador, also had a successful night at the awards. She won two significant accolades, including the TD Fans’ Choice Entertainer of the Year and Fans’ Choice Video of the Year. Loder's wins reflect her connection with the audience and her growing influence in the music community.

Maggie Andrew, from Halifax, added to her achievements by winning the African Canadian Artist of the Year award, along with the Rock/Alternative Release of the Year for her work. During her acceptance speech for the Rock/Alternative Release award, Andrew highlighted the memorable nature of the event by sharing that she commemorated the whirlwind weekend with a tattoo of a cod fish on her arm. This personal touch underscores the significance of the event and the impact it had on her as an artist.

The East Coast Music Awards and the accompanying five-day music conference have faced challenges in recent months. Concerns regarding transparency and representation within the East Coast Music Association were raised last fall, leading to notable changes within the organization. The ousting of CEO Blanche Israel in January sparked criticism from members who believed she had made significant strides in promoting diversity and inclusivity within the music industry.

This year's awards were a reflection of both the current vibrancy of Atlantic Canadian music as well as the ongoing journey towards inclusivity within the industry. As the awards recognized outstanding talent and contributions, they also highlighted the evolving landscape of the music community in Atlantic Canada.
