"Lilo & Stitch Leads Box Office After Record Weekend"

“Lilo & Stich” and “Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning” dominated the box office charts again after fueling a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend

The box office saw a significant boost with the release of two major films, "Lilo & Stitch" and "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning," which together fueled a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. and Canada. With new entries such as Sony's family-friendly "Karate Kid: Legends" and the A24 horror film "Bring Her Back," the total box office revenue reached an impressive $149 million for the post-holiday weekend, marking an increase of over 120% compared to the same period last year.

Taking the top spot once again, Disney's live-action hybrid film "Lilo & Stitch" generated $63 million from 4,410 locations across North America. This performance allowed it to surpass "Sinners," making it the second-highest grossing movie of the year with $280.1 million in domestic ticket sales. On a global scale, its total reached $610.8 million. Conversely, "Sinners" continued to perform well in its seventh weekend, earning $5.2 million, which brings its domestic total to $267.1 million and its worldwide total to $350.1 million.

The eighth installment of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise secured second place with $27.3 million from 3,861 locations. Although this figure represents a 57% decrease from its opening weekend, the film has sold $122.6 million in domestic tickets, aligning with the performance of its two predecessors. However, given its substantial production budget of $400 million, it is still a long way from achieving profitability. Internationally, the film added $76.1 million, including $25.2 million from China, where it had just premiered, culminating in a global total of $353.8 million.

According to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, “This is the year of long-term playability.” He emphasized that the benefits of word-of-mouth recommendations and strong audience retention are now seen as more significant than merely high opening weekend figures.

Among the new releases, "Karate Kid: Legends" emerged as the leader, earning an estimated $21 million from 3,809 locations. The film features Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio training a new character, the kung fu prodigy Li Fong, played by Ben Wang. Although reviews have been mixed, the film received a solid A- CinemaScore and 4.5 stars from PostTrak audiences. With a reported production cost of $45 million and no significant family-friendly competition on the horizon, "Karate Kid: Legends" is well-positioned for success, boasting an international total of $47 million after earlier releases overseas.

In fourth place is "Final Destination: Bloodlines," having accumulated $10.8 million in its third weekend. Notably, this installment now ranks as the highest-grossing film in the franchise, excluding inflation adjustments, with a global total of $229.3 million.

The weekend's other considerable newcomer, "Bring Her Back," rounded out the top five with $7.1 million from 2,449 screens. The film stars Sally Hawkins as a foster mother with sinister intentions and serves as the sophomore effort from twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, who made their mark with the horror film "Talk to Me" earlier this year. "Bring Her Back" received a B+ CinemaScore, a rare achievement for a horror film, and rides the momentum until the release of the next genre film, "28 Years Later," set for June 20.

A new Wes Anderson movie titled "The Phoenician Scheme" also debuted in New York and Los Angeles over the weekend, amassing $270,000. The film is anticipated to expand nationwide soon.

Looking ahead, the summer box office forecast appears optimistic, although reaching the pre-pandemic target of $4 billion will be a significant challenge. May is projected to close with $973 million in revenue, a remarkable 75% increase compared to May 2024's figures, as reported by Comscore.
