"Trump's Call for Netanyahu Trial to Be Dropped Sparks Debate"

JERUSALEM (AP) — President Donald Trump’s call for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s corruption trial to be thrown out has plunged the American leader into one of Israel’s most heated debates, unnerving some in its political class just days after they unanimously praised his strikes on Iran

JERUSALEM (AP) — President Donald Trump's recent intervention regarding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's corruption trial has sparked heated discussions in Israel just days after a strong show of support for Trump's military actions against Iran. Trump's social media statement, denouncing the trial as a "WITCH HUNT," came shortly after he called off an Israeli bombing raid in Iran to maintain a ceasefire. This situation illustrates a significant shift, as the typically independent decision-making of Israel is now being challenged by the U.S. President's direct involvement.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid expressed concerns over Trump's interference, stating that respect for the legal processes of an independent country should be upheld. In a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform, Trump condemned Netanyahu's trial, echoing language used by both leaders to position themselves as victims of political persecution. Trump remarked, "Bibi Netanyahu's trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero..." highlighting the U.S.'s role in Israel's formation and security.

In response, Netanyahu's allies celebrated Trump's endorsement, with a spokesperson translating his remarks into Hebrew. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, once critical of Netanyahu, noted that a call from the U.S. President to annul the trial should not be dismissed. Netanyahu himself acknowledged Trump's support, expressing gratitude for his backing of Israel and the Jewish people.

Netanyahu faces unprecedented legal challenges as the only serving prime minister in Israeli history to be indicted, with charges including fraud and bribery stemming from alleged favoritism towards wealthy allies. The legal proceedings began last year, and despite severe criticism, Netanyahu positions himself as a key figure in Israel's survival amid ongoing conflicts. His opponents argue he is exploiting the war in Gaza to retain power and divert attention from his legal troubles, citing ongoing public protests against his leadership.

Trump has been perceived as a staunch ally of Israel, having supported its territorial claims and mediated agreements with Arab nations during his presidency. His recent military actions against Iran have reinforced this view, but some close to Netanyahu are uneasy with Trump's overt calls for interference in Israel's judicial matters. Lawmaker Simcha Rotman emphasized that while critiques of the justice system may be justified, it is inappropriate for a U.S. president to influence legal actions in Israel.
