"Canada Day 2025: What's Open and Closed"

July 1 hits on a Tuesday this year which makes for a strange lead up with some businesses offering a four-day weekend and others returning to work Monday just to be off the next day

This year, July 1 falls on a Tuesday, which has led to various businesses adapting their schedules, resulting in some offering a four-day weekend, while others are reopening on Monday just to close again for the holiday. This article provides an overview of what is open and closed across the municipality on Canada Day, ensuring residents and visitors can maximize their holiday experience.

Food and Retail

Most major grocery stores are expected to be closed on July 1 or may operate on reduced hours. However, smaller grocery chains and convenience stores could remain open. It is crucial to note that all Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) liquor stores will be closed for the day.

In the retail sector, major chains and malls will be shuttered, though some local shops may open their doors. For those interested in supporting local businesses, a list of shops that remain open can be found on the Discover Halifax website.

While most restaurants and cafes anticipate serving patrons, they may have altered operating hours. It is advisable for customers to call ahead to confirm holiday hours and make reservations if necessary.

Government and Institutions

On Canada Day, all federal and provincial government offices will not be in operation, including Service Canada locations and Canada Post. Municipal government services will also be closed. The 311 Contact Centre will not be available, although urgent calls can still be reported. Additionally, all banks and credit unions will observe the holiday by closing their branches.

Transportation

In terms of transportation, the Woodside Ferry service will not operate on July 1. However, the Alderney Ferry will be available and running on a holiday schedule; riders can travel for free, but donations to the local food bank are encouraged.

Halifax Transit will also be operational but will follow a Sunday schedule with reduced services throughout the day.

Activities

All public libraries across the municipality will be closed on Canada Day, along with most indoor recreational activities. Nevertheless, for families seeking entertainment, museums will remain open during the holiday.

While indoor pools will not be available, the outdoor pools in Bedford and Cole Harbour will commence their season on July 1, welcoming visitors. Additionally, supervised beaches will also be accessible for those looking to enjoy the summer weather.

Celebrations

Canada Day presents numerous opportunities for citizens to express their national pride. This year, Halifax will host KANA’TA: Canada Day 2025, a re-imagined celebration developed in collaboration with Indigenous communities.

This event is designed to honor the traditions of the Mi’kmaw Nation and celebrate the diverse Indigenous communities residing within the municipality. The celebration will feature culturally relevant music performances, traditional dances, a drumming ceremony, an Indigenous market, and a fireworks display.
