"Independence Day 2023: What’s Open and Closed?"

The Fourth of July holiday, also known as Independence Day, celebrates the Second Continental Congress’ unanimous adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776

The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. This pivotal moment in American history laid the foundation for what would eventually become a national holiday. The first celebration of Independence Day occurred a year later in 1777, marked by spontaneous festivities in Philadelphia, celebrating the anniversary of American independence.

However, widespread observance of the Fourth of July didn't become common until after the War of 1812. Following this period, celebrations rapidly gained popularity across the country. In a significant move to formalize the recognition of this holiday, Congress passed a law on June 28, 1870, designating Independence Day as a federal holiday.

This year, as Americans prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July, it's important to know what will be open and closed. Government buildings, including government offices, post offices, courts, and schools, will be closed in observance of the holiday. Additionally, U.S. banks and stock markets will also be closed on July Fourth, reflecting the nationwide observance of this important day. Most FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services will not be operating on this holiday.

As for retail operations, warehouse membership club Costco has announced that it will be closed on July Fourth. However, most major national retailers, including Target and Walmart, plan to remain open, with many offering special promotional sales to attract shoppers during the holiday. Most grocery stores will also be open, although hours may vary by location, so checking local store hours is advisable for customers planning to shop.

In terms of travel, this year is expected to see a significant uptick in road trips and domestic travel, as the Fourth of July falls on a Friday. According to AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland, a record-breaking 72.2 million Americans are anticipated to travel within the U.S. between June 28 and July 6. This represents an increase of 1.7 million travelers over the previous year and is 7 million more than the travel numbers recorded in 2019. Among those traveling, an estimated 61.6 million will take to the roads, while 5.8 million are expected to fly.

Given the increased travel this holiday season, Woodland advises that anyone planning a long trip should take precautions. Recommended measures include conducting a pre-trip inspection of their vehicle to prevent issues such as dead batteries, flat tires, and insufficient fuel, which can lead to frustrating delays on the road.

This year's Independence Day is not only a time for celebration but also an opportunity for millions of Americans to gather, travel, and participate in various festivities. From fireworks displays to family gatherings, the Fourth of July remains a cherished holiday as it celebrates the nation's independence and the enduring spirit of America.
