MEXICO CITY (AP) – A U.S. citizen was arrested in central Mexico over the weekend after possessing multiple firearms, tactical gear, and a counterfeit identification purportedly linked to the CIA. This incident took place in Atlacomulco, a city located 80 miles (130 kilometers) northwest of Mexico City. Authorities were alerted by an anonymous caller who reported that an armed individual was behaving aggressively on an apartment balcony.
Upon their arrival, local law enforcement officials observed the suspect, who was adorned in a tactical vest and helmet, with a rifle slung from his gear. Additionally, he was wielding a knife and had a noticeable wound on his hand, indicating a prior injury. The emergency response to the call highlighted the potential danger posed by the individual, prompting a thorough investigation.
Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s Security Secretary, provided an update regarding the situation on Tuesday. Following consultations with the U.S. Embassy, he confirmed that the arrested man is "not an official nor public servant," dispelling any speculation regarding his potential affiliations with the U.S. government. Instead, he holds a fake identification, which further complicates the case.
The suspect is currently under investigation for illegal possession of firearms, which is a significant offense in Mexico, a country that has been grappling with issues related to gun violence and organized crime. Authorities are also delving into possible connections between the man and organized crime syndicates operating within Mexico, an important line of inquiry that could unveil broader criminal activities.
The arrest underscores the ongoing challenges Mexico faces in terms of security and public safety, particularly concerning foreign nationals involved in illicit activities. With the situation still developing, officials are committed to uncovering the full extent of the suspect’s intentions and possible ties to criminal networks.
