"Shaolin Temple Abbot Investigated for Embezzlement"

BEIJING (AP) — China’s famous Shaolin Temple announced on Sunday that its abbot is under investigation on suspicion of misappropriation and embezzlement of project funds and temple assets

BEIJING (AP) — The Shaolin Temple, known globally for its rich cultural heritage and significance in martial arts, has announced an investigation into its abbot, Shi Yongxin. This inquiry pertains to allegations of misappropriation and embezzlement related to temple finances and assets. The investigation has been initiated by various authorities in response to suspicions of financial misconduct.

Shi Yongxin, also known by his original name Liu Yingcheng, is accused of not only financial crimes but also of breaching traditional Buddhist values. Reports indicate that he has maintained relationships with multiple women over an extended period, resulting in at least one child. This has shocked many followers and drawn negative attention to the temple, given its esteemed reputation.

In a notice released via the temple’s WeChat account, officials confirmed that a joint investigation by multiple departments is ongoing, with results to be disclosed in the future. The Shaolin Temple is located in the Henan province of China and has transcended its religious roots to become emblematic of martial arts, often depicted in films and television, including the iconic 1982 movie "The Shaolin Temple," featuring the famous martial artist Jet Li.

Previous accusations against Shi Yongxin have emerged in past years, including claims of fathering several children and engaging in financial mishandling. However, he was exonerated of all charges during a provincial investigation in 2016, as reported by Caixin Global. Shi has been a part of the Shaolin Temple since 1981 and has held the position of abbot since 1999, which signifies a lengthy tenure at the temple.

His leadership has not been without controversy. In 2015, China's state news agency Xinhua referred to him as a "CEO monk," a title that attracted scrutiny due to his commercialization of temple activities, including the promotion of kung fu shows and merchandise. This commercial focus has led some to question the authenticity of his spiritual commitments.

Recent reports from local media suggest that an online notice claiming that Shi was attempting to flee to the United States with multiple mistresses and approximately 20 children has been dismissed as false. These allegations have contributed to the ongoing public fascination and concern regarding his leadership and the temple's integrity.

As the situation evolves, the Shaolin Temple, which stands as a cultural icon, faces a significant challenge to its reputation due to the actions of its appointed leader, Shi Yongxin. The outcomes of the current investigation will likely determine the future trajectory of both the abbot and the temple itself, given its importance in preserving and promoting the legacy of Chinese martial arts.
