BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) – Haitian police have apprehended former senator Nenel Cassy, who faces charges of conspiring against the state and financially supporting criminal organizations. The arrest occurred on Saturday at a restaurant located in Petionville, an affluent district of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, as reported by Haiti's National Police through a Facebook post. Accompanying the police announcement were images depicting Cassy in handcuffs alongside heavily armed officers wearing ski masks.
The U.S. State Department designated Cassy as a corrupt actor in 2023. Earlier this year, in February, Haiti's police accused him of providing support to gang members involved in violent incidents in Kenscoff, a wealthy neighborhood approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) from Port-au-Prince, which had previously been relatively insulated from the pervasive gang violence plaguing the country. The February attacks claimed numerous lives, including those of farmers working in the nearby hills and a tragic case involving a 2-month-old baby.
Current reports indicate that gangs exert control over an astonishing 90% of Port-au-Prince, as highlighted by the United Nations. In recent months, these gangs have expanded their operations, launching assaults on previously tranquil communities with the intent to capture more territory and enhance their influence. Last year alone, more than 5,600 individuals were reported killed due to escalating gang violence in Haiti.
