PIRAEUS, Greece (AP) — Riot police established a security perimeter around the Israeli cruise ship Crown Iris at Greece's largest port, Piraeus, on Thursday morning. The move was aimed at preventing several hundred protesters from approaching the vessel as it docked. Protests have been widespread throughout various Greek islands and mainland ports along the cruise ship's route, with several incidents escalating into clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.
In Piraeus, located near Athens, protestors held flares and waved Palestinian flags while positioned behind a line of riot police buses. Markos Bekris, a protest organizer, voiced strong sentiments during the demonstration, stating, “They are unwanted here and have no business being here. The blood of innocent people is on their hands, and we should not welcome them.” According to the organizers, social media posts from travelers indicated that off-duty Israeli soldiers were among those on board the cruise.
