JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) – Rising tensions marked Indonesia's capital on Friday after a tragic incident involving a delivery rider who was allegedly run over by a police armored vehicle during clashes between riot police and students protesting against lawmakers' allowances. This incident escalated unrest in the city, stirring a significant public outcry.
Protesters gathered early on Friday at the headquarters of the police mobile brigade in central Jakarta. In an attempt to break through the compound, some demonstrators clashed with police, prompting law enforcement to use tear gas in an effort to disperse the crowds. The aftermath saw an angry group of protesters setting fire to a police post and nearby vehicles, as well as damaging traffic signs and public infrastructure, which caused significant congestion in the area.
The protests gained momentum following a viral video on social media that appeared to show the death of motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan, who was only 21 years old. Kurniawan was reportedly in the process of completing a food delivery when he became caught in the violence that had erupted in previous days. Eyewitnesses recounted that the armored vehicle from the National Police's Mobile Brigade unit sped through the crowd, striking Kurniawan and failing to stop, subsequently running over him.
In response to the incident, President Prabowo Subianto addressed the nation in a televised speech, expressing deep concern and sadness over the events. He described his shock and disappointment over what he termed the "excessive actions" of the police officers involved. The former general noted that he had been closely monitoring the unfolding situation and emphasized that a thorough investigation had been ordered. He urged citizens to remain calm and vigilant against elements that might seek to disrupt order.
Following the tragic event, seven members of the police motor brigade linked to the incident were detained and questioned, although the driver of the armored vehicle has not yet been identified. As a mark of respect, thousands of motorcycle riders, along with human rights activists and political figures, attended Kurniawan's burial on Friday, filling a major traffic circle in Jakarta and spilling into the city’s main thoroughfares.
